This is Coco's first and our last Christmas in El Paso. There are no ornaments on our tree because of a curious kitten pretending to be the tree topper. I will miss this house, but I'm looking forward to the ones to come in Granbury.

Every year in Johnson City, Texas the Perdenales Electric Cooperative lights up the gigantic oak trees in front of their building. It takes them about 6 to 8 days to light them all. My dad and I stumbled upon this electric landscape while driving on our way from El Paso to Austin. It was a nice break after a long day of nothing but miles of desert. Happy Holidays!

CROSSING THE GOLDEN GATE

The Golden Gate Bridge, completed in May 1937, connects the City of San Francisco and Marin County. The suspension bridge remains a popular tourist attraction in the Bay Area and its “International Orange” color is iconic to the San Francisco skyline.

Northern Cali offers taste of city and rural life

Editor's Note: This is the fourth in a series of stories and photos bringing the U.S. and the world to UT.

A trip to the northern California coast may be just the right escape from the Texas heat this summer. Urban life surrounds San Francisco and the Bay Area. Spanning across just 46.7 square miles, the “City by the Bay” is home to more than 800,000 people. The Golden Gate Bridge, Frisco’s rolling hills, Chinatown, and its Victorian architecture make San Francisco a year-round international tourist destination. With its winding roads and spanning coastline, Point Reyes National Seashore, 30 miles north of San Francisco, is a breath of fresh air in contrast with the hustle of city life.

The historic Point Reyes Lighthouse, located on the tip of Point Reyes National Seashore, warned mariners of danger in foggy weather until it retired in 1975.

The City Lights Bookstore, founded in 1953, is an independent bookstore located on Columbus Ave. in Little Italy. It is known as an underground literary meeting place and published American poet Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl and Other Poems.

"A Bigger Splash" by David Hockney - 1967

This is for my second project in RTF 318 (Image and Sound). It was inspired by the David Hockney's 1967 painting, "A Bigger Splash." All of the music is original (and improvised), thanks to Mic Vredenburgh on the guitar and cello. Recorded in my make-shift recording studio in the hallway between my bedroom and bathroom.

This film was influenced by the painting-on-film process started by experimental filmmaker Len Lye in the 1930s. In a film class, we were asked to make a bass wood model inspired by a painting. We then drew the model from different points of view. After taking six 6x6 cutouts of those drawings, we filled in the blanks of a twelve piece collage using any medium. From the collage, we then started to manipulate the film inspired by our model, drawing, and collage. I painted on clear 16mm film leader with acrylic paints, india ink, and watercolor. Then, I digitally scanned the film and edited it in Final Cut Pro. It took me 22 hours to edit the film and five months to complete the whole project.

Music: “Sayuri’s Theme (End Credits)” composed by John Williams from the film “Memoirs of a Geisha.” It features solos by Itzhak Perlman (violin) and Yo-Yo Ma (cello).
